Career Development: Information Technology
In the Information Technology field of work, a common
question that has not been addressed widely enough to those interested in
working as a Computer Professional is the method of career development. It is very common amongst aspiring Computer
Professional students to ponder exactly which is necessary to follow in
ultimately obtaining a desired career in the Information Technology field. Career planning, strategy, and professional
enhancement are contributing elements which make self-planning and
self-management the ideal method of career development.
Career Planning
Career planning is necessary to
achieve success regardless of the field of work. The Information Technology field is no
different. One must have a clear vision
of the finish line to even come remotely close.
“Having a career plan signifies that a person has a clear
picture of his or her future.” (Chang, 2002) This is achieved by defining
specific detailed oriented goals. Such
goals can only be set by the individual and not their employer.
Career Strategies
Career strategies can be defined as
specific activities and/or goals focused primarily career specific. By participating in these activities, an individual
would be possibly jeopardizing his/her own potential area of interest or
desired goals. It is important to note
that the Information Technology industry is rapidly expanding at a rate so fast
the U.S Government cannot predict accurate job statistics five years from now.
This means the number of competitive certifications grow just as fast. Thus, working towards accomplishing career
goals rather than individual goals could cost you in the long run in the event
that competition for advancement in a company becomes overwhelmingly difficult
to obtain due to competition. Pursuing individual strategies ensures one has a
well-rounded skillset and feels confident with the acquired knowledge.
Professional Enhancement
“Professional enhancement emphasizes
skills developments.” (Chang, 2002) By self-planning and self-managing
one’s career, an individual will surely experience professional enhancement in
result of his/her accomplishments carrying out self-planned career goals. This results in a wide, personalized, variety
of skills and qualifications.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Information
Technology field is very unique in that a self-planned and managed method of
career development approach is ideal when considering career planning,
strategy, and professional enhancement.
